Extra Urban
Compilations of ‘driving songs’ are usually filled with dad rock rubbish like Queen, Whitesnake, et al - all so predictable and boring enough to make you want to crash your car to make it stop, rather than inspiring a well-accompanied car journey.
OK, so my taste in music is very eclectic, from (good) mainstream pop to some fairly avant-garde stuff, so I’m never going to be in the market for a TV-advertised album with a voiceover from Jeremy Clarkson.
I hope you’ll find my driving playlists more imaginative and introduce you to some music you’ve not heard before.
The first two playlists I’m posting reflect how driving is divided when the authorities calculate emissions and fuel economy: Extra Urban for faster-paced motorways, A- and B-roads, Urban for when driving around towns and cities. I’ve selected music that feels right to listen to in the car, in those situations.
On this Extra Urban list, I’ve included uptempo music, with tracks from Brazil and mainland Europe, as well as the US and UK. I hope you enjoy it.
