I’ve been a journalist and editor for 30 years, working for many of the UK’s biggest media outlets, including the Press Association, Channel 4 and multiple national newspapers.

In addition, I’ve worked for consumer magazines and websites, B2B publications, specialist and trade titles, and covered all aspects of the automotive and mobility industries.

I’ve worked across print, online and digital publishing, constantly looking forward, learning new skills and adapting to the technological changes in the media.

As the freelance journalism market became more challenging, I increasingly supplied content services to a range of multinational brands, including adidas and Siemens.

Whatever your editorial requirements - from one-off commissions to establishing a content operation from scratch for your brand - I can offer a combination of fresh thinking and a wealth of first-hand experience,

With 40 years of experience in public, private and third sectors, across multiple industries, I’ve pretty much seen it all.

Which means I can offer a range of consultancy services that range from helping companies make the most of new understandings and new technology (including AI), to helping individuals maximise the content on their dating app profile.

What connects these disparate consultancy services is an understanding of people, systems, change and communication - and how they interact.with each other. In business - and in life - this can lead to some much-needed clarity.

As a journalist, editor and content marketer for most of my working life, I have continuously adapted to the technological changes in the media industry, bringing the same high editorial standards to every format and channel. This valuable experience can help clients maximise the impact of any content project.

My 20 years working in the automotive industry, covering every aspect, from showroom to boardroom, has also given me a valuable perspective. That experience - along with an understanding of the multiple factors influencing our changing world - is available to clients in the sector looking for clarity in a time of flux.

And, after a couple of years ‘on the apps’, and with the perspective of a longtime content creator, I can advise clients on how to maximise the impact of their dating profiles.

Uncommon Sense is a platform for connective thinking in a complex, changing world.

The monthly newsletter spans politics, economics, technology, culture and psychology to help explain why things are happening in the world, not just what is happening. It’s for people who value context, judgement and clarity in a fragmented world.

There are over 600 million blogs online, so one more won’t hurt.

Unlike the slow thinking process that characterises the Uncommon Sense project, the blog posts are my ‘hot takes’ on anything that takes my generalist fancy.

I might not be as gonzo as my hero Hunter (him opposite on the typewriter), but I’ll try to outrage and amuse - ideally at the same time.

Music is my way of life…

Music has been an indispensable part of my life since I was at least five years old and it continues to be the backdrop to many of my waking hours.

Creating playlists has been a part of that passion since I was a teenager. It still is, so I’ll share my weird and wonderful themed selections here. Enjoy the sounds.
